Postgame Interviews: Rapids @ Fire

Denis Hamlet had a lot to talk about after the Fire's impressive 2-1 win against the visiting Colorado Rapids. Hamlett mentioned how pleased he was with the play of John Thorrington, who scored both of Chicago's goals. "Last week he [Thorrington] played well too, he defended well, got himself into some good spots last weekend; and tonight, the same thing, from the 1st minute to 90th minute he was defending, got forward, got 2 good chances and finished them."
Coach Hamlett also talked about what seemed to be his main concern, which was the lack of finishing opportunities by his forwards. "Tonight our attacking guys put on a good display and if we had been clinical in the final 3rd the score would have been more than what it was tonight… Tonight we could have killed the game off by getting a third goal."
Overall, the Fire Head Coach seemed happy with his team's performance. The smile that was missing last week was back on his face and Hamlett was quick to credit his defensive line for a lot of the team's early success.
He also talked a little about the Rapids lone goal of the game. "For 86 minutes we played pretty solid, we didn't give up many chances. We never want to give up any goals on set pieces, and tonight was our first goal let up on a set piece."
In the locker room BackDraft noticed the players seemed relaxed again and for the first time this season had an iPod pumping rap music throughout the room.
John Thorrington was the main attraction and he was quickly surrounded by a crowd of reporters, all ready to interview the Fire's lone goal scorer. "Any time you score as a player it's exciting," Thorrington said when talking about his performance against Colorado. "Tonight my teammates got me in a good position to score two goals and thankfully I finished them."
Thorrington went on to talk about how happy he was to be starting in his second game of the season after an injury plagued 2007 and early 2008. "Coming back from preseason I've had a little hiccup with injuries but I think now just stringing consistent days together, healthy, I'm getting my chance and taking full advantage of it," he said.
All the players seemed to be pleased with the team's performance but Diego Gutierrez probably summed up the theme in the locker room best, saying "Everything is good when you're winning."
It sure is.
