The Fire Shows Up, and So Does Section 8

Posted by: Tom Dunmore in Section 8 on

4-0? Not bad. Despite the promises of the official game guide, the Fire were unchanged from last Saturday and every player who disappointed against Real Salt Lake made amends last night. A brilliant performance, and Backdraft will be updated later with further reaction, analysis and highlights.

Section 8 also showed up in force. According to one longtimer on the Section 8 forums, the turnout of well over 1,000 in Sections 117 and 118 marked the largest supporters' gathering ever at a Fire home game. The overall attendance of 15,552 was also solid for the earliest ever home opener, on a frigid cold and wet Thursday night.

Nice photos!!

I think its safe to say that the tie in RSL has a lot to do with the turf?

Yeah, it certainly seems like the first game had a lot to do with rust and the turf now. Though the biggest difference I noticed was the attitude of some of the players. Justin Mapp proved many people, including me, wrong with his performance -- unlike the first game, he looked hungry and lively.

The turf is an aspect that sets MLS apart from most leagues.
The ball bounces differently, and it's not as forgiving as a regular grass.
If you ask me it demands a really versatile player.
Oh yeah, Mapp does look like he's playing a lot better.

More photos? Wish there were some better shots from afar, so you could get a real sense of how full the Harlem End was and its relation to the players on the field.
