The Fire XI The Fire have been having some success in their 4-2-3-1, but John Thorrington's injury concerns may cause Coach Hamlett to make some changes to both the lineup and formation this week against the Dynamo. According to Luis Arroyave of the Tribune, Thorrington is listed as OUT, although Friday's team notes have left him mysteriously off the injury report. Assuming the worst, the Fire will need someone to step in alongside Logan Pause in the defensive midfield and step up into the attack. Ladies and mostly gentlemen, this week's Wilman Conde Watch (tm) is officially on, accompanied by the equally mysterious Lider Marmol Watch (also tm). Lider was last seen in Canada or Mexico to complete his visa, but the appearance of either defender would certainly make up for any changes made in the backline. The potential return of Frankowski to the lineup gives the team a lot of flexibility up and down the roster. It's a good guess that the Fire will run with 2 strikers with Tomasz back in the starting 11, keeping the chemisty between Rolfe and Barrett while leaving a lone defensive mid in the backfield.
The Opposition The two time defending champs have gotten off to an unimaginably bad start in 2008, but they can't be overlooked. Brian Ching and Dwayne DeRosario have finally gotten on the score sheet, and the Dynamo have finally gotten into the win column. With their winless streak at an end, Houston will be looking to build some momentum, although their limited offense will find the Fire's backline to be their toughest test of the season. Key matchups will be Chris Rolfe/Wade Barrett and Blanco/Ricardo Clark. Injury Report Houston midfielder Brad Davis is questionable with an adductor strain. For the Fire, CJ Brown and Brian Plotkin are still sidelined with hip tendonitits, and Stephen King is out with a maxilla fracture. Prediction Chicago defense should continue to provide a solid foundation for possession and set up the counter attack well. Houston has a talented midfield, and when on the top of their game one of the best in the league, but in light of recent struggles, and the Fire's improved chemistry, the Dynamo's edge is minimized. Short of any miracle 50 yarders from DeRosario, we're predicting another strong performance from the back line. Fire 2 - 0 Houston Barrett 20' Mapp 50' Probable lineup provided by the Chicago Fire and is does not completely reflect the predictions or opinions of Section 8 Chicago.
