Completing the Ring of Fire Print E-mail

When Andell Holdings, led by Chairman and CEO Andrew Hauptman, purchased the right to operate the Chicago Fire in 2007, they were not buying a blank slate. They were buying a team with a distinct tradition. It is an organization that honors this with its Ring of Fire, whose inductees represent those who have contributed significantly to the passion that defines the Fire community.

In the Ring of Fire are former President and GM Peter Wilt, former manager Bob Bradley, and former star players Lubos Kubik, Frank Klopas and Piotr Nowak. Fittingly, it has always been up to the inductees to select new members of the Ring of Fire, giving the club a red thread running through it that links it from its origin to the present. This is unique in American soccer.

This year, they chose to put in the Ring of Fire two supporters who tragically died within the past eighteen months, Dan Parry and Brandon Kitchens. Both represented everything that the Chicago Fire has stood for over the past decade, and in their own ways, each contributed much to that tradition.

It should be remembered that a club is not merely made up of players, coaching staff and executives, as is currently represented in the Ring of Fire. Also key to its identity -- and much of the reason why it's something worth buying in the first place -- are the supporters. The decision of the Ring of Fire members to induct two of its strongest supporters lost at a tragically young age recognized this fact.

Unfortunately, the current ownership, once it learned of this decision, decided it would not be appropriate to induct Parry and Kitchens, and is instead planning a different memorial. In a wrenching turn of events, the families of both had been told of their impending inclusion in the Ring of Fire only to then hear the decision had been rescinded shortly before it was about to be made public. In the future, the Ring of Fire inductees will only be part of a larger group that will select new members.

Ben Burton, Chairman of Section 8 Chicago, said that "I have a lot of emotions regarding the issue, but most of all I'm incredibly disappointed and sad. I am distraught over the decision, and I'm most horrified at the thought that the families were already notified about the induction of their departed family members and the organization still reversed the decision. That was simply callous and wrong.

"Regardless, I promised the organization I would do anything and everything to help with whatever memorial they choose to do. I hope we can help them do something fitting. Short of putting them in the Ring of Fire though, I will be disappointed."

That disappointment is shared even by those who were not close to Dan or Brandon. As a relatively recent member of Section 8 myself, I did not know either well. Every week, I hear a story about them from their friends in Section 8 that makes me sorry for that -- yet proud to follow in their footsteps as a Fire supporter. This is exactly what the Ring of Fire should honor, and the handling of this decision -- however well-intentioned it may be -- is a disturbing usurpation of that tradition.

It seems that as a result, no-one will enter the Ring of Fire this year. This is a terrible shame. I hope that instead, the Chicago Fire organization recognizes the role its supporters have played in its history by inducting "Section 8, in honor of Dan Parry and Brandon Kitchens" into the Ring of Fire.

Please also see Peter Wilt's views on the decision here , and join the discussion at the Section 8 forum.

see I don't understand why Section 8 doesn't get inducted?!? it would be remembering DP and BK wouldn't it and thousands of others. I sorta do understand the thinking of the FIRE they think that whenever anyone dies that is significant or close to the team then they will have to get them inducted into the ROF.

But, I think it is flawed thinking and off character of the organization to take away the rights given to the ROF members. See P-dub if you get to be President of the club again, well I could see you saying hey I'm in again...lets overturn what the ownership said.

I agree with DJ - I think it would be better to induct sectino 8 as a whole .. and maybe even put intitals at the botton of the shirt.

However, the fact that the families were notified makes this all come off rather insensitive , and I can see why people would be upset. along with the anger from the members of the ROF who basically had their votes and voices nullified.

I think it is ignorant to consider inducting section 8 as opposed to fallen comrades. The Idea I have heard was they will be number 8 on the jerseys. Thats enough for me. Dan Perry was a great guy who touched so many people I think it is very appropriate. Brandon I can't say I have known. Dan I worked with for the rights of Colombian workers who were being killed. So I think it is a great honor. I think the intial thing is weak, sorry if I come off strong but. I think it is another reason why I will be fire for life....

Well I read the last entry first. Let me go back and take back my praise. Still fire for life just bitter. Without the fans the Fire are nothing, I love the play on the field, but the section is what brought me in...

If I were to brainstorm other options that would use the Ring of Fire -- and thereby respect the original choice -- but not run into some of the more problematic aspects, what about a blank jersey? It's similar to the idea of Section 8, but without the baggage that recognizing Section 8 (but really meaning Dan and Brandon) would bring.

The other option would be to not have an honoree, but I think choosing to not make a choice is already a part of the mechanism, so I don't know if it would impart the necessary recognition.

The general idea is to leverage a "moment of silence" for the Ring of Fire. As a concept, it's easier to extend to other members of the Fire family who have passed.

I think the Fire made one really good decision and one really bad one in this whole thing.

The good one, which I think is forgotten by many, comes from the fact that Brandon and Dan were not paid members of the Fire organization. Instead, they were fans, which is more important, a truer and more fundamental part of the team than anyone other than the most dedicated of players. But, there is a risk run when fans become integrated seamlessly into the fabric of a club, which I think has happened at clubs such as Boca Juniors, and I both understand and support the decision of Andrew Hauptman in making sure that the Fire stay clear of that possibility before it is even a real threat.

But where does he get off demanding that the Ring of Fire sessions become open? Huh? Just screw off, Drew.

Have we forgotten that membership in the "Ring of Fire" brings with it the honor of participating in future selections? With all due respect, to induct two individuals posthumously or to induct a group the size of Section 8 could both complicate future selections. The choice to select these two fine individuals was honorable but so too is the memorialization of them independant of the ROF. I think an individual selection of a deserving and qualified person will be best for the Ring now and in the future. God bless Dan and Brandon and their families.
