Rolfe for McBride? Print E-mail
Written by Tom Dunmore

The Fire want Brian McBride, Brian McBride wants to play in Chicago, and Toronto wants a tasty young treat in return for his allocation rights. It's believed they want a talented forward.

And one of the Fire's talented young forwards is out of contract at the end of the year, the same one who surprisingly started on the bench last game. His name is Chris Rolfe, and an MLS source told Backdraft that "Rolfe’s name is coming up often in conversations [about McBride], because he will be out of contract after this season and is asking for a hefty pay increase to resign."

How about that, then, Fire fans? It's the view of this writer that the Fire should not gut their team to sign McBride -- Trader Mo had apparently been asking for 2-3 players initially -- but moving a player who may well be leaving anyway to pair McBride and Blanco together in what would undoubtedly be a championship-caliber attack might well be worthwhile.

There's no doubt that losing Rolfe would be a blow: he's an extremely talented young player who always works hard whereever he's asked to play. Indeed, he's rarely been able to shine in his favored position as a forward this season. That frustration is perhaps also why he has yet to renew his contract.

When contacted by Backdraft, Chicago Fire Communications Director Gregg Elkin said the team did not comment on rumors as policy, but did confirm Rolfe's contract was expiring this year.

I'd hate to see him score against us. That would hurt.

The thought of McBride and Rolfe playing up top is what I've been dreaming about since the Brian rumor began.

Seeing Ivan in a SJ shirt was bad enough; seeing Rolfe in a different uniform would be horrible.

Rolfe's the only guy we currently have besides Blanco with the ability to stay calm and create on the go. He proved it in the playoffs and he sure as hell proved it againt AC Milan.

Lord, I hope this doesn't happen.

How much of Mcbride would we have? Would he be part time?

seeing how Luis has so much dirt on Rolfe, i would suspect we'd have heard about something from him......... i dunno tho

either way, i think it would be STUPID to trade Rolfe.... lets look at it this way.... we trade Rolfe for BMB.... we get BMB for 1 1/2 yrs, barring injury.... the guy is 36..... Rolfe, would be with the Fire for years to come.... if he asks for more $$$, then he should get more $$$...

Rolfe is to much of a factor of how we play to trade him... i know we've had a bad June, but we always do... Rolfe is too big of a player to trade here.... Conde and Mapp are still up in the chopping block... why not trade a guy who's going to leave this winter anyways??

my theory has been:

Fire trade Conde and relatively low D.Pick to TFC
TFC trade Conde to RBNJ for a chunk of Jozy's allocation $$$ and more low D.Pick(s)

-the fire lose a quality back (but he's gone in Jan anyhow) to pick up a good forward
-RBNJ get a player JCO has been after (not to mention a guy who plays a spot they are weak in)
-TFC gets allocation money to spend on another qualtiy player of their choice to side-by-side their DP when signed... not to mention a couple low level draft picks

everyone wins, in fact, TFC make out like bandits in my opinon....

I would keep Rolfe, trade Mapp and Conde...

Rolfe should definitely not be part of this trade. Mapp could go tho

It would definitely be a heart breaker to lose a young talented player like chris rolfe... But I think Brett hit it right on, get rid of mapp and conde and TFC pick up a decent mid-fielder in Mapp and make a little money for Conde... We keep Rolfe give him the money he deserves and have Blanco Mc Bride and Rolfe leading our attack!! UNSTOPABLE!! Thats how I dream of this deal going down, hopefully it happens that way... Whats up with Barret?!? They need to do something with his ass, he's killing me!!!

I say we give them Pause, Diego, and Carr that way they'll get a defender, midfielder and a forward (Just kidding but if they would go for it then great for us).

There is NO WAY we trade Rolfe to TFC, at worse they could have Barrett that's as far as I would go
