When Section 8 Chicago first approached the Chicago Fire regarding the allegations of racism at Toyota Park, we were obviously very disappointed in the club’s initial reaction. So disappointed that we felt we had to follow through with our plans for a silent protest at the game on August 16th. And while the team may have lost to D.C. United, the ISA truly hopes and believes that the overall result of voicing our concerns will be positive.

Prior to Saturday’s game, the Chicago Fire took what we believe was a very important next step towards resolving the issue. Here is a letter we received from Interim President, Javier Leon:

Dear Ben and Section 8,

As a result of an incident at a recent game at TOYOTA PARK, allegations of inappropriate conduct by stadium staff has been brought to the attention of Chicago Fire staff, management and ownership.

The Chicago Fire aims to create and maintain a family-friendly fan experience at TOYOTA PARK. The Chicago Fire does not condone any discriminatory or unsportsmanlike behavior by any of our employees, vendors or fans.

The Fire was disappointed to learn that inappropriate conduct may have occurred, as we take such matters very seriously. We are in the process of actively reviewing the incident and we're engaged with all parties involved. We intend to swiftly address the situation in an appropriate, professional manner.

We appreciate your passion and enthusiasm for the Fire. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Javier Leon
Interim President
Chicago Fire

Sinceramente,

Javier León
Presidente Provisional
Chicago Fire

It’s an important acknowledgment that our concerns were raised. I do firmly believe that Javier Leon takes these concerns seriously, but as of right now there has not been a time set to meet with the Club to discuss the next steps. We hope something can be arranged in the coming days.

In the meantime, we would like to invite all of you to an informal Q&A session at The Globe Pub at 7:30PM, before this Thursday’s game against LA. A few of us should be on hand to help clarify any misconceptions and have an open dialog regarding the next steps in the process. If you haven’t already, please feel free to read the F.A.Q. we’ve put up to help clarify any questions you may have.

This is a step in the right direction. Those who show up don't let your feeling get in the way of find a solution towards this.

My question might be the issue with the broken benches in 117. I remember the same thing happening in 118 and the front office reinforced them and the problem is solved. I would like to know why the front office didn't reinforce 117. I'm not a rocket scientist but that would solved the issue. The front office says each bench costs $1,000 to repair. How much to make them stronger?

I might make it but if not can someone ask this question for me. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Thank you, Javier, for taking our concerns seriously. I hope that this is the first of many steps to healing these wounds and building better relations between the Fire and Section 8.

I'm just curious. What exactly is the step forward? Maybe I missed something but I don't see them addressing harassment by security, the punitive actions that occurred when you brought all this to their attention, and their behavior at the game. Did I miss something?

The Fire went from not being willing to even acknowledge that we had raised concerns regarding racism to acknowledging that the concerns were raised. That is one way to look at it.

Another way to look at it is that we've made a statement, and Section 8 and the fans need to keep moving forward regardless of what the Fire has or has not done so far.

We haven't completely bridged the gap, but I believe that we're moving in the right direction.

My response when dealing with bosses, is real simple, I trust them as far as I can throw them... Talk is cheap...

And What Ben does in the privacy of his closet is his business...

I don't sit in S8...I have season tix in another part of the stadium. I've held season tix since '98. I can remember that first season and being concerned with the behavior of certain fans who sat near me. I was new to the sport and was leery of the level of support exhibited by fans of a team. As the season went on I became more "sophisticated" in my understanding of the game and the
level of passion that a team can generate. When S8 was born I was happy to see that the fans that need/want to express their enthusiasm in such an exuberant manner had a place to go. While I can appreciate that "Carlos Valderrama sucks d@ck", it was difficult for my twelve-year-to hear that and then listen to me talk about sportsmanship the next day at his youth game.
I love the passion and the enthusiasm of S8. There have been games where I stood with you at Soldier Field, Naperville, and at Toyota Park. I have traveled to away games and joined in the support that has put the home team's fans to shame. S8 is an ISA and so am I. My “association” has two people and we choose to sit elsewhere in the stadium. Your style of support is no better or no worse than mine. I choose to cheer when I want, stand when I want. My support for my team is no less than yours; your passion is no greater than mine. Nail me in reponses. I don't care. I am a Fire fan and don't really give a flying f@ck whether anybody else thinks my level of support is good enough.
So what's my point? Not sure...I read the blogs, scan the forums, and check the websites. I see the crap that people are going through and I am reminded that the behavior of Monterrey is similar to that of the guys in the neon green coats at Soldier Field (Garcia Security?). I can't begin to count the number of times I saw fans in orange jackets (I believe they were "Ultras" and Polish fans) "escorted" quickly from the stands back then. Times don't change. People with power want to use it, otherwise what's the point of having it? Is it about race? Nationality? Profit?
Don't know, don't care. All I know is that people are being treated unfairly for the way they want to lawfully support their team. You want to stand and wave flags and shout support and blow horns and throw streamers and shout expletives and give the finger and chant your asses off… go right ahead. I will laugh and cry, live and die by our team in my own way.
And as a very small, very private, very unofficial ISA that sits in Section 109 I will support all our fans' rights to be treated with the dignity and respect that we deserve.
Count on my support with whatever action S8 deems necessary. This year it’s Sector Latino, next year it could be the Shandy Sisters, the Western Front, and Ultra’s Red-Side.

Go Fire.

I wrote to my season ticket coordinator and advised them that I would have to seriously reconsider renewing my season's tickets for 2009 if the Fire and toyota park did not take the concerns seriously and not just brush them over with a cookie cutter corporate resoponse. I got back a "sorry to see you go" sort of response and that was about it. I also went to the NY Red Bulls Game and noticed that there was no stand for the cheering leader to stand on and I noticed them in the stands with everyone else...what is that about?

We're working with the team and should have the stands back for the next game. Pardon the lack of 'official' comments of late, but we should have one soon.

Thanks to everyone for your patience.
